Ganzi County (甘孜) is located in the northwest part of Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Sichuan Province in southwest China. Ganzi (or Garze, Ganze and Kandze) means “a pure white and beautiful place” in Tibetan language. It is named after the first gelugpa temple (Ganzi Lamasery) in the area, which was built by a student of the 5th Dalai Lama in more than 1,300 years ago.

The county seat of the Ganzi County is situated in Ganzi Town, which is an important place in what is still seen as the indigenous Tibetan population as the historical region of Kham. Situated in a large valley with grassy hills at an elevation of 3,390 meters, the town lies tucked north-east of the gorgeous snow-peaked mountains of the Minya Konka (Mt. Gongga) range. Tibetan culture is abundant and vibrant here, it’s easy to spend a few days in this friendly place exploring the beautiful sorrouding countryside which is scattered with Tibetan vilalges and monasteries.
