Hongcun Village (宏村), located at the southwestern foot of the Mt. Huangshan, lying in the Thunder Hillock and facing the Southern Lake, 11 kilometers from Yi County. It covers an area of 30 hectares and be praised as the “Chinese village in picture” for the green mountain and crystal water.

The bird view of village’s shape is like a resting water-buffalo. The running water flows in the winding ditches to every household, and is finally gathered in a little lake at the entrance of the village. The peaceful environment and beautiful surroundings present outsiders a piece of pleasing and tranquil picture of a typical country life in South China. Over 140 well-preserved folk residences of Ming and Qing Dynasties, the Ideal-Upholding Hall, noted for its exquisite and gorgeous “Three Sculptures” and thus called the “Civil Forbidden City”: the Southern Lake sceneries, the Southern Lake Academy, the Spring Morning of the Moon Pond, the Ox Intestine Ditch and so on.
